'THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES'...

Recently I watched 'The Assassination of Jesse James' and absolutely loved it! Most of of all i loved the introduction to the film, I thought the cinematography, editing and souns was outstanding and created an incredible opening to a film.

The use of time lapses of landscapes and setting shots throughout the opening alongside the chiming music created a dream like scene, which also accompanied the dream like vision in many of the shots as there was a blurred edged frame. It seemed as though it was shot out of a pinhole like or fisheye view camera. Also, the constant contrast between the light and dark palette throughout the opening, especially in the last shot emphasises the mystery of Jesse James (Brad Pitt). I'm usually not fond of dialogue over the top of shots in movies and felt it was something that was not needed in our 2 minute openings. However, I felt the mixture of the mans voice and the actual words spoken in this film really finished off the opening to 'The Assassination of Jesse James'. Overall, this is definitely one of the most brilliant openings to a film i have seen.

COMPLICIT...

Last night I watched Channel 4's new drama 'Complicit.' Aside falling asleep due to the boredom of the entire programme, i did manage to catch the opening title sequence and thought it was really eye catching. I didn't manage to find a clip or image of them, but thought i would blog about them anyway.

I am a big fan of the simplicity of them as they were just bold white text, slowly appearing on screen. This is something we have aimed for on our 2 minute openings as we felt in order for it to look effective, simplicity was key! So as explained before, we have stuck to balck background and white text, gradually appearing in the lower right hand corner. Even though in 'Complicit' it looks as though the opening titles have not been thought out, when analysing further a lot of work has gone into the timing and placement of the text and typography, a factor that wehave focused on within the production of our projects.

ORGANISED MESS...

An image of our plan that we drew out whilst editing. It is just an update of how far we are in our 2 minute film introductions as we have now got all our shots, putting them in the order we want and overall cinematography organisation. We have also finalised our music, from that huge list of music we had we have picked Foals - Blue Blood and then it will continue into Kings of Leon - Closer as the atmosphere changes. So far it is all going to plan and we are all feeling pretty confident for the deadline. Now it is just continuous editing and perfecting!

GANGSTER SQUAD...

On Friday night i went and watched 'Gangster Squad' and i really enjoyed it! Aside from the cast being exceptional, i thought the storyline was really good and not your stereotypical 1940's gangster movie. The fact that it was based on a true story made it even more enticing as the events within the film are quite surreal. The mise-en-scene in the film was amazing, making me wish that everyone dressed like they did in the 1940-50's. The cinematography and editing throughout the movie was unbelievable, especially this one shot of a shooting scene that was cut into slow motion on some parts then sped up and repeated over again, several times. I would have loved to have found a clip of it, but seen as the movie is still in the cinemas, it's not possible.

However, i managed to find this clip on Youtube of part of 'Gangster Squad' being shot and especially towards the end fight scene, it is really interesting how much work goes into filming, something we are all trying to do for our 2 minute introductions...
